The drawback to die struck pins is that, without color, polished platings lack contrast and make it hard for you to see the intricacies of your design. To remedy the situation, consider using an antique plating to add some contrast. Besides adding a cool vintage appearance to your pin, it will also make small text more legible, and your design easier to see.

Die struck pins, also known as bare metal pins, are created by creating a mold, or die, and using it to strike metal blanks. The manufacturer uses a high precision tool that strikes the blanks with immense pressure. After the pins have been stamped, they are plated. Since die struck pins are not colored, they skip this process and are ready to ship after passing a quality check.
The two materials that are typically used in the manufacturing of custom pins are either iron, or a zinc alloy. Iron is the cheaper of the two. It is both heavier, and less malleable. As such, it is not ideal for creating pins with intricate detailing, and the added weight also causes the pins to pull on the fabric it’s adhered to. It is for these reasons that we prefer to use a zinc alloy, as it results in lighter, higher quality pins.
Die struck pins are used for a variety of purposes such as company branding, promotional giveaways, employee recognition, commemorative items, fundraising, and as collector’s items.
